Creative Aluminum Foil Top

This project explores garment construction using unconventional materials, focusing on how structure and light interact on the body. I chose aluminum foil for its reflective surface and sculptural potential, despite its fragility and technical challenges. The goal of the project was to test how a delicate, rigid medium could be transformed into wearable form while preserving its striking visual qualities.

PROCESS DEVELOPMENT

I almost gave up on using aluminum foil several times because its properties made sewing extremely challenging. The material tore easily, required slow and careful stitching, and magnified every mistake. But despite the difficulty, the way it reflected light—especially in sunlight—was too beautiful to abandon. In the end, I’m glad I stayed with it, and I’m satisfied with the final outcome.

This project also pushed my sewing skills forward in a way few others have. Because the material was so fragile, I had to practice repeatedly, adjust my technique, and learn how to work with both delicacy and control. It still isn’t perfectly sewn, but I can clearly feel the technical growth through the process. I plan to complete the lower half of the dress later and photograph the full piece on a day with beautiful natural light.
