Knit Foil-Pressed Free Cutting Dress

For this project, I explored Julian Roberts’ free-cut method as a way to experiment with the stretch, drape, and responsiveness of knit fabric while minimizing waste. My goal was to create a silhouette that was both flattering and functional, adapting the free-cut technique with additional seams to better shape the garment to my body. This approach allowed me to study how knit fabric behaves when cut, reshaped, and reassembled.

PROCESS DEVELOPMENT

Working with knit fabric presented several technical challenges, especially in maintaining stretch at the neckline and hem. Through trials with different stitches, I found that using a twin needle preserved elasticity more effectively and produced a cleaner finish. Adjusting asymmetrical hems and refining areas like the neckline and armholes further strengthened my understanding of knit construction.

For surface design, I used silver stamping to create a texture that sits between elegance and industrial modernity, brushing the transfer gel in loose strokes before applying the foil. Materiality became a central feature of the dress, adding dimension to the otherwise minimal silhouette. Overall, this project improved my knitwear sewing skills and expanded my ability to control shape, movement, and finish in stretch fabrics.
