Vintage Remake Dress

This project was my first experience creating a remake garment, despite having previously worked on many environmentally focused artworks. The assignment challenged me to rethink how existing clothing can be transformed into something new, wearable, and expressive. I approached the piece with curiosity toward sustainable design and a desire to understand how deconstruction and reconstruction can extend the life and meaning of a garment. Although I anticipated technical difficulties, I was excited by the project’s potential and the opportunity to learn new skills through hands-on making.

PROCESS DEVELOPMENT

The construction process proved more difficult than I expected, requiring repeated adjustments, re-sewing, and constant problem-solving due to my limited experience. But working through these challenges gave me a much clearer understanding of what sustainable design truly entails. Seeing how the garment evolved from its original form made me realize how designers can give clothing a longer, more versatile life through thoughtful redesign.

This project strengthened my appreciation for remake practices and highlighted the importance of strong foundational skills in enabling creative freedom. In the future, I hope to continue exploring remakes and experiment with more varied styles and combinations as my technical abilities grow.
